Piggy bank teaches kids about energy, money

power hog teaches kids about energy and money

The Power Hog took second place at Apartment Therapy Unplugged’s annual Greener Gadgets competition.

This cute little piggy bank teaches kids not only about the virtues of saving money, but also the virtues of saving energy. Plug its tail into the wall, and your lamp into its nose, and it cleverly demonstrates that electricity costs money by requiring coins to be deposited at regular intervals to keep the electricity going to a connected device, which I think would be more than enough to concretely link up the two concepts in a child’s mind.

Ironically enough, I think the piggy bank itself may be an ungreen vampire, since it probably draws power in standby mode when the coins aren’t a-droppin.

Well, you can unplug it and connect the desired device directly to the outlet.

While this issue can be very vexed for most people, my thought is that there has to be a middle or common ground that we all can find. I do value that you’ve added pertinent and sound commentary here though. Thank you!
