There are just so many ingenious ways to innovate around such a simple time-keeping device. Here are some of the best, in ascending order of awesomeness:
5. Water-powered clock
Actually, “water-powered” is an inaccurate description. This thing is better described as “acid-powered” since in addition to water, the clock needs a spritz of lemon juice. Otherwise, the travel-friendly (as long as it doesn’t blow up in your bag or cause trouble with the airport security) and doesn’t require any further batteries or energy sources. This nifty gadget was found at Apartment Therapy Unplugged, and comes in four colors (green not shown here).

But if it’s cloudy all day long, or if the sun simply doesn’t reach your room in the morning, the Peaceful Progression Wake Up Clock, found at Hammacher Schlemmer, has a light that gradually dims for 30 minutes when you go to bed, then slowly brightens starting 30 minutes before your alarm time. This actually has some scientific merit — the presence or absence of light helps regulate your circadian cycles. From my own personal experience, I know that waking up with the sun in my eyes, although it sometimes happens before I want it to, is an excellent way to start my day.

Americans have often been mocked and criticized for their obsession with largeness…we have a large obese population, our buildings are gigantic, and our cars are unforgivably huge and gas-guzzling. But given the suburban lifestyle that characterizes much of the United States, the size of the cars we like is understandable. This aired as a Super Bowl commercial and is clearly dated because it comes from GM’s better days. I think now the big concern is “are we bankrupt” rather than “are our cars good?” But the sad robot is still pretty funny/cute.
