August 2009 – For the first time in 4 years, Sony Corporation’s Walkman digital music player outsold APPLE Inc.’s iPod in Japan. The Tokyo-based Japanese electronic research company (BCN Inc.) said as of August 30, Sony’s market share of its portable music players climbed to 43% which is just slightly higher than Apple’s 42.1%.

Tokyo to get battery swap stations for electric taxis

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Founder and CEO of Better Place Shai Agassi had been working hard convincing the Japanese government to give his company’s concept a try. He admitted to have received funding from the Japanese government for its Tokyo pilot project. As a result of the company’s successful battery switch demonstration earlier this year in Yokohama, the project [...]

Shoot a picture, quite literally

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

The DORYU 2-16 pistol camera is probably the weirdest and most awesome camera I have ever laid eyes on. And would you believe that it’s a fully functional 6mm police-issue camera?

Rescue drone eats humans, regurgitates later

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

The Tokyo fire department has a good few more challenges than does your typical department. In addition to rescuing kittens stuck in trees and, oh, putting out fires, they have to deal with earthquakes and mudslides on a regular basis. And in the mecca of all things hi-tech, it’s no surprise that they’re beginning to [...]

Bento Box USB

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Thai food might be cheap ($7 for lunch + appetizer, yum), but hardly anything can beat the value of a bento box. My favorite thing about bento boxes is the variety. Typically, I can get a box of rice topped with teriyaki salmon, some seaweed, pickles, mushroom, dumplings, and a little omlette for 5 or [...]

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Usually when I’m at the beach, I have one of two urges: to splash myself silly in the water, or to build a sand castle (that given my skill, turns into just a pile of sand surrounded by a moat of sorts).
In Japan, though, things are a bit different. Most phones over there (and [...]

Simple pleasures: Kuroshio Sea

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Kuroshio Sea in Okinawa, Japan is the world’s second largest aquarium, holding nearly 2 million gallons of water, large enough to accommodate sharks and manta rays. This video is just a steady shot of the aquarium and the fish swimming around inside, taken by a Canon 5D Mark II by Jon Rawlinson.
There’s a very serene [...]

Robot makes ramen faster than cup noodles

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Would you eat at a joint called Momozono Robot Ramen? You bet I would. I can’t tell what I love more about this shop – the ramen or the robot.
The noodle house gained popularity not only because of its delicious noodles, but also because of the robotic chef. Customers place their orders on a [...]

Self-balancing robot on two wheels

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

From BoingBoing Gadgets:

With such tiny wheels, this “table robot” from Laksmi-Do looks terribly delicate, but it can still ably hold itself upright and carry up to two kilograms of beverages and snacks. Woe betide the drunkard who forgets to recharge it, though. If you’ve got time to lean, you’ve got time to clean.

Cell Phone Facade

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

This building is in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. Pretty cool, huh? Although I’m not sure what a cell phone needs a FAX button for.
